It is becoming a growing form of protest over the outcome of the Presidential Election; people flying the American Flag upside down. But now those protests are sparking a protest of their own.

On rooftops or front porches, our flag is displayed as a symbol of our national pride.

Larry Guerrieri fought beneath the flag in Vietnam, but outside his Dorseyville home Thursday it was flying upside down.

Guerrieri makes no effort to hide his feelings about President Barack Obama.

"This Benghazi incident, he left them four people there to die," says Guerrieri. "That’s the way I feel about it."

So, his flag flies protest

But Guerrieri and Bill Rodgers, who put his upside down flag back in his yard Thursday in Bellevue, feel strongly that the country is in trouble and the President is only making it worse.

"It will stay there for four years," says Guerrieri.

Whether you agree with the sentiment or not it is protected as free speech by the Constitution. And apparently, this is nothing new. People have been flying flags upside down after elections for years.

How would Old Glory look with 30 stars instead of 50? As far-fetched as it may sound, the White House might soon be forced by its own rules to examine the question.

On Nov.7, the day after President Barack Obama was re-elected, the White House’s website received

a petition asking the administration to allow Louisiana to secede.

If 25,000 people sign the petition by Dec. 7, it will "

require a response " from the Obama administration, according to published rules of the White House’s online "We the People" program.

The Louisiana petition has collected more than 12,300 signatures in four days. A separate effort from Texas has 15,400 supporters.

Similar petitions from 18 other states began arriving Nov. 9, bringing the total — for the moment — to 20.

The White House website publicly displays

petitions that have attracted at least 150 signers.

What began as a pair of parallel stunts appears to have gathered steam. Other than

Louisiana and Texas ,states with secession-related petitions pending on the White House website now include Alabama , Arkansas , Colorado , Florida , Georgia , Indiana , Kentucky , Michigan , Mississippi , Missouri , Montana , New Jersey , New York , North Carolina , North Dakota , Oregon , South Carolina and Tennessee

Three states —

Georgia , Missouri and South Carolina are each represented by two competing petitions.

The establishment that opened here this year has features that demanding clients naturally expect from a love motel. Brazil, after all, is a world leader in these short-stay pleasure palaces, which beckon couples for trysts away from prying eyes with names like Swing, Absinthe and Alibi, and design motifs like medieval castles or of the

American Wild West .

But Belo Horizonte’s newest love motel stands apart from the crowd in one crucial aspect. It is for dogs.

Animalle Mundo Pet

, an eight-story enterprise in an upscale district in this city of 2.4 million people, introduced its dog motel alongside aisles featuring items like beef-flavored Dog Beer (nonalcoholic), a dog spa with a Japanese ofuro soaking tub, and canine apparel emblazoned with the symbols of the local soccer clubs Atlético Mineiro and Cruzeiro.

The beehivelike atmosphere at Belo Horizonte’s pet megastore, which employs a staff of 35 (not counting the veterinarians on call), points not only to Brazil’s surging pet dog population, now about 36 million, but also to major changes in Brazilian society after years of economic growth and shifting demographic patterns. Similar stores thrive in other large Brazilian cities; in São Paulo, a public hospital for dogs and cats has been opened; and some plastic surgeons provide Botox injections for dogs.
