Airport Road Construction
Monday 08-25-2008 5:49pm MT

Construction at Sky Harbor will slow roadway traffic entering the Airport from the east beginning August 26. These roadway restrictions are expected to last nearly a year – through June 2009.

From August 26, 2008 through June 2009 westbound lanes of Sky Harbor Boulevard south of Terminal 4 will be reduced from three to two lanes of traffic while construction crews improve the “C” Checkpoint at Terminal 4. Four security screening lanes are being added to Checkpoint “C” to create a total of eight. Because the C checkpoint is located on a bridge over Sky Harbor Boulevard, the construction will result in roadway delays. The bridge is being widened by 120 feet. Additional roadway traffic restrictions will take place during overnight hours.

In addition, the eastbound loop return from the upper level on the north side of Terminal 4 will be closed during this time frame. Drivers are encouraged to watch for roadway construction signage.

Drivers should expect roadway delays when entering Sky Harbor from the east. This includes drivers coming from the Loop 202, State Route 143 and 44th Street.

HOV Lanes
Wednesday 08-06-2008 5:45pm MT

Motorists driving on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will find a quicker drive late this fall with the opening of HOV lanes to absorb carpool, bus, and motorcycle traffic between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Via de Ventura in Scottsdale. Not to mention the now under way HOV lane project to the south on Price Freeway, this is scheduled to be completed summer 2009.

To complete these HOV projects, the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has scheduled traffic restrictions Aug. 8-11 and Aug. 15-18 so work crews can remove some temporary concrete barriers, install others and re-stripe lanes. Restrictions include:

Aug. 8-11

Northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) from Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to Chaparral Road will be closed from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Southbound Loop 101 (Price Freeway) from 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to Baseline Road will be closed from 11 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will be limited to one lane from Princess Drive to Shea Boulevard from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Aug. 15-18

Southbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will be closed from Chaparral Road to Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

Northbound Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) will be limited to one lane from Shea Boulevard to Princess Drive from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday.

New metering lights
Monday 08-04-2008 6:30am MT

The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) will activate the ramp meters in time for the morning commute on Tuesday, Aug. 5. They are located on westbound and eastbound I-10 (Maricopa Freeway) and on northbound I-17 (Black Canyon Freeway).

The westbound I-10 ramp meters will be activated at 40th Street, 32nd Street/University Drive and Sky Harbor Boulevard during the morning commute from 6 to 9 a.m. The eastbound I-10 ramp meters will operate during the evening commute from 3 to 7 p.m. and are located at 24th Street, 32nd Street/University Drive and 40th Street. The northbound I-17 ramp meters will also regulate traffic during the evening rush hour. They are located at 16th Street, Seventh Street and Seventh Avenue.

ADOT adding HOV lanes
Thursday 07-31-2008 7:37am MT

For years, Loop 101 (Price Freeway) drivers have been clamoring for HOV lanes on the Southeast Valley freeway. Now, their construction is about to begin.

Beginning Friday (Aug. 1) drivers will notice the establishment of a construction zone in phase one of the project in the median of Loop 101 between Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) and Baseline Road. Phase two of the project will begin next year, stretching from Baseline Road to Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and the entire stretch from north to south will be under construction at that time.

Once the Loop 101 (Price Freeway) HOV lanes are completed, they can be used by vehicles with two or more occupants, qualified hybrid vehicles and motorcycles during peak travel times, between 6 and 9 a.m. and 3 and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also, the new lanes will accommodate expanded express bus service for the Southeast Valley.

The Loop 101 (Price Freeway) project is part of an effort to provide HOV lanes for the entire route between Loop 202 (Santan Freeway) and Interstate 17. HOV lanes on Loop 101 (Pima Freeway) from Loop 202 (Red Mountain Freeway) to Princess Drive in Scottsdale are expected to be completed this winter.

Tips for pumping gas
Monday 07-28-2008 6:51am MT
Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands,so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity
and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.
A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.
Gas Saving Tip
Wednesday 07-23-2008 6:19am MT

Combining errands into one trip saves you time and money. Several short trips taken from a cold start can use twice as much fuel as a longer multipurpose trip covering the same distance when the engine is warm. Trip planning ensures that traveling is done when the engine is warmed-up and efficient.

With a little planning, you can avoid retracing your route and reduce the distance you travel as well. You'll not only save fuel, but also reduce wear and tear on your car.
