Federal prosecutors are opposing ex-U.S. Rep. Rick Renzi's request to remain out of prison while he appeals convictions.
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Renzi had been scheduled to begin serving a three-year prison sentence earlier this month for public corrption and money laundering.
But the start of that sentence has been temporarily delayed pending court action on his request.
The trial judge in the case rejected Renzi's bail request, saying the former Congressman hadn't raised a substantial question of law or fact likely to result in a reversal of his convictions or a new trial.
Renzi is appealing that ruling to the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals.
Federal prosecutors are urging the appellate judges to also turn down Renzi.
Renzi represented Arizona's 1st Congressional District from early 2003 until early 2009.
