Making it easier for children, who are victims of crime, to be interviewed by a defense attorney.
Senate lawmakers pass a bill, requiring prosecutors to be with a child during an interview with a defendant's attorney. Kathleen Meyer with the Pima County Attorney’s Office says existing loopholes can be a big problem if the child’s been sexually violated by a relative. She says right now, a parent or family member can take a child victim to a defense attorney for the purpose of getting the child to recant the story.
Under the voter approved Victims Bill of Rights, a child has the right to say "no" to being interviewed by a defense attorney. House Democrat Bruce Wheeler’s bill would ban the meeting unless a prosecutor is also there.
