They admitted the child was abused in their home

A couple who ran a daycare business out of their home has been arrested of felony child abuse in the death of a 2-year-old girl who was in their care.

27 year old Ryan Reed and 28 year old Allison Clement, ran their daycare near 45th Street and Southern.

Investigators said Reed admitted to abusing Savannah Cross on numerous occasions, including striking, kicking and roughly grabbing the toddler, who had been living at the couple's home since July, when her mother dropped her off.  The mother had returned a couple of times since then to visit her daughter, who would have turned 3 late this month.

Clement admitted to investigators she witnessed the abuse but did not try to stop it.  She also said that when Reed disciplined the girl, that discipline was sometimes "excessive".

Investigators still do not know the cause of death. Additional charges may be filed based on the medical examiner's report.

According to court paperwork, Reed told police that he was home alone with the girl on Monday evening while Clement and the couple's two children were elsewhere.  At one point, he said, the girl was on the floor and he stepped over her.  In the process, he said, he inadvertently kicked her and then stepped on her abdomen with his full weight, which he said was 200+ pounds.

Reed told detectives that the girl immediately curled up into a ball with her arms wrapped around her abdomen, and stayed in that position for the rest of the evening.  Reed said he eventually picked up the girl and put her in her playpen, making no effort to seek medical help for her even though she was constantly groaning.

The next morning, he said, he woke up and found her unresponsive, so he called 911.

Five children were in the home at the time the 9-1-1 call came in. Two of those children belong to Reed and Clement and were taken into the custody of CPS.
