The sooner you can send yours, the better

It's crunch time for the nation's shippers.  FedEx reports that Monday Dec. 10 is expected to be its busiest day of the year. For the entire holiday season from Thanksgiving through Christmas, FedEx expects to handle 280 million shipments, representing a 13% increase from a year ago.

For the US Postal Service, the big crunch is a week later.  Peter Hass, spokesman for the US Postal Service in Phoenix, says Monday Dec. 17 is the day when the post office expects the longest lines and the highest volume of letters and packages being mailed.

If you want to avoid the hassle of standing in line at the post office, Hass says you can now buy postage online, and also use the Postal Service website to arrange for package pickup at your home by a mail carrier.

However, the deadline for mailing something overseas using the Postal Service's Express Mail is Tuesday Dec. 11.
