Gathered $12,000 for fake bone marrow transplant
GILBERT - Police say this Gilbert woman claimed she had cancer and collected $12,000 in donations for a fake bone marrow transplant.
Kelly Ann Wasko, 41, was arrested Tuesday on multiple charges of fraud. She claimed she desperately needed a bone marrow transplant, but that her insurance wouldn't cover it, according to police.
A family friend created a Facebook page to solicit donations for the medical procedure, and Wasko racked up more than $12,000, including $1,000 from her adult daughter and $350 from someone who actually had cancer.
Police say she also defrauded an additional victim out of $8,000 during a period of two months.
Wasko was booked into the 4th Ave Jail on 5 counts of fraudulent schemes and 6 counts of theft. She is being held on $25,000 bond.
CPS is also investigating, as Wasko has young children.
