Phoenix Police say it appears two men were assaulted because they are gay.

Phoenix Police were called to an assault near Central Avenue and Osborn Road on Friday, November 9. After investigating, police say it appears the two male victims were assaulted because of their sexual orientation.

The suspects, 22-year-old Jermon Barnes and 24-year-old Ernie Barnes were charged with aggravated assault and booked into the Maricopa County Jail.

Police say the injuries of the victims were severe enough to be classified as a aggravated assault rather than a simple misdemeanor assault. One victim was taken to the hospital, the other received medical help on his own.
