PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona State Public Health Laboratory says a school-aged child is recovering after being bitten by a rabid bat.

The name and age of the girl hasn't been released and officials will only say she lives east of Phoenix.

Health officials say the child is receiving post-exposure treatment and is expected to be fine.

It's the first rabid bat confirmed in Maricopa County so far this year.

In 2011, Maricopa County had five rabid animals confirmed with rabies — three bats, one bobcat, and one javelina.

Authorities say rabies is fatal to humans once symptoms appear.
