A new smart phone application that could help save a life.

The American Red Cross has released a new smart phone application named "First Aid by American Red Cross" to assist in emergency situations.

First Aid features information on 21 common first aid topics, instructional videos, and guides for specific emergency situations.

Trudy Thompson Rice with the American Red Cross says the goal of the app is to, "help people prepare for and then respond to an emergency."

The Pima County Sheriff's Department has partnered with the American Red Cross and is making the app available for officers to use on all county issued smart phones. Deputies responding to an emergency are encouraged to use the app as a guide.

"Down in Pima County it [the app] is mandatory on all of Pima County's issued phones. That is a huge endorsement of the utility and usefulness of the app." says Rice. "It's a really a good tool for everybody to have."

First Aid by American Red Cross is available for free download on any smart phone.
