Two AK-47s seized

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — A Yuma man trying to cross from the U.S. into Mexico at a southwestern Arizona border crossing has been arrested after authorities say they found two AK-47s hidden in his Jeep.

San Luis Port of Entry director Robert Schroeder says 18-year-old Ramon Avitia was detained by Customs and border Protection officers Thursday.

The Yuma Sun reports that Avitia was heading across the border into Mexico when Customs officers and Border Patrol agents searched the jeep and found the rifles hidden under the rear bench seat. They also found four ammunition magazines in the center console.

It is illegal to export weapons or ammunition without the proper documentation.
