Stemmed from FBI investigation into an independent expenditure group that was led by a Tom Horne ally
PHOENIX (AP) — County prosecutors are lodging a civil enforcement action against Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne for alleged campaign finance violations during his 2010 campaign.
Maricopa County Attorney Bill Montgomery says in a written statement Monday that the allegations stem from an FBI investigation into an independent expenditure group that was led by a Horne ally.
State law prohibits coordination between campaigns and independent expenditure committees.
Montgomery says Business Leaders For Arizona operated in close coordination with Horne.
The prosecutor says Horne directed the group's fundraising and communications strategy with an ally who ran the group.
In the past, Horne has said there was no coordination between his campaign and the independent committee.
Horne defeated Democrat Felecia Rotellini in November 2010 to become the state's attorney
general.
