John Chavez confronted an 11-year-old boy in Chandler
CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) — Authorities say a convicted child molester has been arrested for an alleged assault on an 11-year-old boy in Chandler.
Chandler police say 22-year-old John Isabel Chavez also is being held at the Maricopa County Jail on suspicion of assault, disorderly conduct, unlawful imprisonment and DUI. It's unclear whether Chavez has a lawyer yet.
Police say the child told his mother that a man grabbed him in a restaurant bathroom Sunday night, but the alleged offender was gone when police arrived. Officers then responded to the scene of a one-vehicle crash near the restaurant and arrested Chavez for suspected DUI.
He was later linked to the other case. Police say Chavez was convicted of child molestation in 2010, is on lifetime probation and is a registered sex offender living in Mesa.
