PHOENIX (AP) _ Pinal County officials have upheld the firing of a former sheriff's deputy for comments he made to a newspaper after being shot during a 2010 confrontation with drug smugglers.

Phoenix television station KPHO reports that a county merit commission on Wednesday upheld Sheriff Paul Babeu's firing of former Deputy Louie Puroll.

Puroll reportedly told a Phoenix New Times reporter that he had been approached by members of a Mexican drug cartel several times over the years.
