Tips for protecting your home and car during an Arizona monsoon.

From high winds and heavy rain to lightning and flash floods, monsoons deliver some of the most hazardous weather Arizonans face all year.

To help prepare for this year's extreme weather, AAA is offering tips for protecting homes and cars when conditions worsen. Here are some ways to weather the storm.

At home:

-Review your homeowner's policy. Ensure that your home is protected against monsoon damage. Standard home insurance policies do not have flood coverage.

-Secure outdoor furniture. Even in weak storms, garbage cans and lawn furniture can easily be blown over.

-Prepare for electrical surges. Protect sensitive electronics such as computers and televisions by plugging them into surge protecters. Also keep flashlights and batteries on hand.

On the road:

-Drive slowly. Roads become slippery when water mixes with oils and dirt, making it harder to control a vehicle.

-Do not tailgate. Stopping distances increase on wet roads.

-Inspect your vehicle before driving. Conditions can worsen quickly during a monsoon. Before hitting the road, be sure brakes, headlights, and windshield wipers are all working properly.
