The fire looks to be suspicious in nature.
TOLLESON, Ariz. - Firefighters battled smoke and flames at a church near 95th Avenue and Pierce Street.
Crews got the call about the fire around 2:30 a.m. Friday and quickly put it out when they arrived at the scene, but around 4 a.m., a hot spot in the attack began to burn. Then the entire roof and attic were engulfed in flames.
Tolleson Fire Chief George Good says they believe the fire started in the sanctuary. They're hesitant to say it's suspicious in nature, but are concerned about the cause.
Crews from Tolleson, Goodyear, Phoenix and Avondale are at the scene. FOX 10's Tom Fergus says they may have been able to save one of the buildings surrounding the church.
Church members are devastated about the loss, as it's been in the community for 50 years. Three different wards meet in the building: Estrella, Coldwater and Tolleson. Over 1,000 people are affected by the fire.
The investigation into what caused the fire could take weeks.
