25-year-old man hit an undercover officer
A Phoenix police sergeant was involved in an altercation with a suspect near 7th Avenue and Dobbins Tuesday.
It began when the sergeant, who was coming from the training academy, saw a man acting strangely on 7th Avenue near a school.
The sergeant pulled over and asked the man if he needed assistance. That's when police say the man walked over to the sergeant's unmarked car and began punching him in the face.
The sergeant sent out a distress call.
Police say the suspect knew the car belonged to a police officer.
The sergeant fired a round at the suspect, who continued to walk toward the school, then collapsed.
No officers were injured.
Police say they're interviewing a witness.
It's unknown if the suspect and the sergeant knew each other before the incident.
