Remember the Greek columns in Denver four years ago when then Senator Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech after having been nominated by the Democrat party as its candidate for president in the 2008 election?  He stood high above the adoring audience, the lighting was perfect, the music was powerful, and the evening was magical.  It appeared that nothing could stop the commanding and ascendant Democrat party.  Senator Obama would be swept into office on an evocative message of Hope and Change, and a new era of peace, love, and prosperity would be ushered in.  Fast forward four years . . . things haven’t quite gone Barack’s way.  The economy’s in bad shape, unemployment is high, the Middle East is unstable, and the Democrats are broke.  Turns out that the much-vaunted Billion Dollar Campaign has not materialized, nor will it prior to the November election.

One of the ugly effects of the Democrats’ substantial failure in fundraising is that their national convention in Charlotte, North Carolina will be vastly less glorious and impressive than the 2008 convention.  And as we’ve noted in prior Ham Sandwich Updates, numerous Democrat congressional candidates will withhold their support for the president by staying home, largely because they don’t want to be caught on television with the politically poisonous president.  With the bad optics that result from this kind of fundraising failure, it’s clear to see why the president is at substantial risk of being beaten by a Ham Sandwich.
