SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. (AP) - Sierra Vista school administrators have yanked a book following parental complaints of sexually graphic material.
The Sierra Vista Herald reported (http://www.svherald.com/content/sierra-vista-news/2013/09/12/359300) Thursday that Buena High School officials told the school board earlier this week that ``Dreaming in Cuban,'' by Cristina Garcia, was on the state's recommended core-curriculum list.
One parent has pulled her son from class after he was asked to read sexually explicit passages aloud.
Garcia told The Associated Press on Thursday that she thinks it's a shame that students will be deprived of a broader, cultural experience.
School curriculum director Terri Romo says she was told books are recommended to show an appropriate reading level, not necessarily for purchasing.
Superintendent Kriss Hagerl says had the district been aware, they would have had teachers provide an alternative option.
