Tempe Cancels New Year's Eve Fireworks

(Tempe, AZ)  --  Downtown Tempe's New Year's Eve fireworks show is being cancelled because of extremely dry conditions on "A" Mountain.  Fire officials say they denied the Downtown Tempe Authority a permit for this year's event because of the risk to the public, emergency responders and fireworks technicians.  They add that if fireworks were to start a blaze, the mountain itself -- also known as the Hayden Butte Preserve -- might be seriously damaged.  Alternate sites are being sought for next year's celebration.
