Contaminated irrigation water may have been the cause of an E. coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma area. The Food and Drug Administration says samples taken from canal water in the region has identified the presence of the same E. coli strain as the one in the outbreak. The FDA and the CDC have been collecting water, soil and cow manure samples in their investigation into the outbreak that sickened more than 200 people in 36 states, and left five people dead. The agency says, so far, only the water samples are matches to the E. coli strain.
