January 2013’s My Military Hero is U.S.Army SSGT Steven Merrett. SSGT Merrett was nominated by his sister-in-law, Beth Merrett. Steve Joined the Army after September 11th to protect his family and country. His sacrifice and honorable service makes him a hero in his family's eyes as well as his fellow Americans. Enlisted in the Army, SSGT Merrett has been deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq, one with the 10th Mountain Division out of Fort Drum, NY as Field Artillery. Currently serving with Civil Affairs, with a mission to improve the lives and sustainability of Afghani civilians as a humanitarian effort. SSGT Merrett is currently home and is completing his counter intelligence degree at Emery Riddle in Prescott. SSGT is married with three young children. Steve remains active in the Army Reserves and will be shipping out for his third tour to the Middle East in the Fall this year. SSGT Merrett is a member of the American Legion Honor Guard Rifle Squad performing numerous funeral ceremonies each week for deceased veterans, as well as helping the homeless veterans in our community.
